Hi, I understand how frustrating the online posting situation is. You have two things you have to keep in mind to help improve your chances that your resume will get through to the hiring person. 1- Use of keywords and 2- Volume. On keywords, if your resume doesn’t reflect the words in the opening, your chances of being picked go down radically. Many times they use a resume management system of some sort and it’s looking for specific words that the person on the other end is using. Assuming you have the criteria, you need to closely mirror some of the same words to increase your chances. Volume – you have to assume that 100′s if not 1000′s may apply for the same job. That means in order for you to improve your chances, you have to apply to a high number of positions that you’re qualified for. With those numbers applying, even if you’re a perfect match you’re swimming in a stream with lots of fish and you have to keep that in mind. It’s also the reason why you don’t want just online applications to be your only job search method.

Dear Dorothy,I've been working at an entry level position for about two years. For the last 6 months, I feel as if I have outgrown my job and don't see any room for growth. I enjoy my job and the people I work with, but I feel like I need to make the next move in my career. How should I move forward?

Dorothy, what’s the deal with the on-line applications, is there a trick? … all responses come back thanks but no thanks.
