ADVICE FROM DOROTHY

Dear Dorothy,I've been working at an entry level position for about two years. For the last 6 months, I feel as if I have outgrown my job and don't see any room for growth. I enjoy my job and the people I work with, but I feel like I need to make the next move in my career. How should I move forward?

Hi, here are some thoughts:

- Career growth is best achieved if you can pursue it where you are. Look around your place of business and analyze if there is any other work or positions you would be interested in doing. If you do find other positions or work then create a plan with your boss to start taking on assignments to ready you for that work. Volunteer to fill in. Growth only comes if you go after it most of the time, so you have to be the one to make it happen. If you are in an entry level position the implication is that there are higher level positions to pursue and with only 6 months of experience under your belt you probably still have other things to learn. You may be getting inpatient or bored as 6 months is about the amount of time it takes to be fully functional in a job. You also should be looking around your own area of responsibility to see what problems exist that aren’t being addressed and solve them. When management sees you taking on work that hasn’t been pointed out they will be impressed and will want to reward you with new assignments or jobs. However, if you have done that and the conclusion is there is nothing more for you to do then it is time to move on to a new place of business. When you are launching a job search and you are employed it gets trickier to keep your job search separate but you will have to block out time on your personal calendar to work on your job search. You will also have to figure out when you can work day time activities like phone screens and interviews. It can be done but the process will take longer than if you are unemployed and could work on it during the day. The good news is you have a job so juggling the time management for a job search is worth figuring out.
Thanks for your question. Dorothy

Open Letter to College Students – Please Think About Your Career Direction

Dear College Student, I’m sure you’re truly enjoying your years in college; I know I did.  You are swept up in the tide of family and peer influence that headed you to college because it is a good idea; and you need to have a degree to get a job.  All of that is true, [...]

Career Management: New Boss? New Career Opportunities

The one thing you can count on in business is nothing ever stays the same.  That goes for the boss, too.  Bosses come and they go even when your job remains in place.  In some businesses, they come and go so fast they feel like a hit and run.  While it would be nice to [...]

Love The Career? Hate The Job?

There are times when we are well immersed in our careers, convinced we love the work we do, and yet we’re unhappy with our job.  It’s not a comfortable feeling to have.  We’re left wondering if we made a bad decision about the career, because we can’t sort out our feelings about the situation.  Sometimes [...]

Profile of a Master Networker

I met Alice Tang* a year ago through a friend I had previously worked with.  We were introduced over email as two people who probably have some professional synergy.  All these months later, I sit in awe of this tiny, Chinese powerhouse thinking, if her method of networking could be packaged up for others, we’d [...]

Bad Boss Series: You Hired Who To Be My Boss? And Other Mysteries

This is the final installment in the Bad Boss Series.  I think it’s important to answer once and for all:  How did the bad boss get the job?  You and your peers are constantly scratching your heads wondering if the boss has compromising pictures of the CEO.  How else could this insane person get the [...]

7 Questions To Help Manage Average Performers

Every manager in teams and organisations will have to manage three different levels of performer; poor (below standard), average (at or about standard) and high (exceeding standard). There is a school of thought that suggests the Pareto Principle works in that 80% will be average with the other two categories having 10% each. Here are 7 [...]

Career Advice: Never Surprise The Boss With Bad News

There is only one thing worse than delivering bad news. That is not delivering bad news when you know trouble is brewing. Recognize that it is a cardinal sin to let your boss and the organization be surprised by bad news. No organization escapes bad news forever. Budgets are not met. Deliveries are late. Equipment [...]

What To Do When The Boss – Can’t Communicate?

You know this kind of boss.  What they say and how they say it leaves you completely befuddled about what they are trying to convey.  To add to this, they might be yelling while delivering this completely incomprehensible tirade.   Are we having fun yet? Just because they’re the boss, doesn’t mean they are a pillar [...]

What To Do When The Boss – Hovers Over You?

This bad boss is sometimes known as the “helicopter boss”.  They seem to have nothing better to do than to lurk over your shoulder while you’re trying to get your work done.  To add insult to this, they may nit-pick and even rework what you’ve done.  It leaves you wondering why they hired you in [...]

Sometimes, there are BAD bosses.  This series is intended to address the most common issues with a bad boss and steps you can take to reduce the impact on you both personally and professionally.
